“Dr. West is still alive,” Susan Avondale told Sydell Jenkins, as they sat at the kitchen table, their lunch long finished.
“And the church?” Sydell asked.
“Still there,” she said.
Chapter Three
Barbara Bellamy, her husband Shawn, and their ten-year-old twin daughters Sandra and Candace, sat in front of the fireplace in the living room, playing a game of Monopoly. There was nothing else to do on such a cold, dreary, rainy night. A storm raged outside.
Barbara’s mother Helen sat in her favorite rocking chair, knitting peacefully, and watching her family play their competitive game. She loved the sound of their laughter. She hadn’t grown up with games and laughter and enjoyed watching them connect with each other.
The twins were identical, but Helen had no problem telling them apart. There was always a little thing that set identical twins apart.
The phone rang just as Barbara was out of the game. She got up to go answer it, and the rest of them continued. Helen set her knitting down on her lap, and closed her eyes for a little nap. She was comfortable in her rocking chair, and the sound of the rain hitting the house and windows was like a lullaby to her ears. Barbara returned to the living room after a few minutes, her happy expression gone and replaced by a look of horror.
“Curtis and Linda are on their way here,” she told her husband, who stood up immediately when he saw her face.
“In this weather? What’s wrong?” He walked over to her, and put a protective arm around her. “Barbara what happened?”
She stared at Helen, who was now sleeping. The twins looked at their mother, wondering what had her so spooked. She realized they were there, and said, “Girls, why don’t you go to your rooms now. I need to talk to your grandmother.”
They looked confused, but she couldn’t explain why they had to end their game early. “Everything is gonna be fine. Just go to your rooms. I just need to speak with the grown-ups right now.”
The girls looked at each other, got up, and left the living room together.
Shawn hugged Barbara tighter. “Baby, what happened? Who was on the phone?”
“It was Marcus. He said he received a call from a woman in Barcay. The woman was looking for Mother. To let her know her sister had passed away. “
“Sister?” Shawn said. He shook his head in confusion. “What sister?”
That’s what Barbara wanted to know. She went over to Helen, and shook her gently. “Wake up, Mother.” When Helen opened her eyes, Barbara asked her, “Mother, who is Hattie?”
Helen’s eyes grew large, and she stared up at her daughter in fear. It was obvious she recognized the name.
“What do you know about Hattie?” she asked in a weak voice. She hadn’t heard that name in years. She had hoped her children never would.
“I don’t know anything about her. But she’s dead.”
Helen’s hands flew to her mouth in shock. Her eyes watered. “Dead? Hattie’s dead? Oh God. Hattie.”
